The ONE STOP SPOT for MULTICULTURAL CHILDREN'S BOOKS

Summary

In this story, it is the Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos. All around the town, or pueblo, people are getting ready to celebrate. People are hanging up streamers and sugar skulls, and music is filling the streets. People are eating fresh fruit and tamales, which is a special holiday treat.  Everyones favorite part of the day is when they put on makeup and dress like a ghost, to join in on the parade.  On this day the people celebrate life and death.

Personal Response

I really enjoyed this story because I didn’t personally know much about Dia de Los Muertos. I also really liked how this book included Spanish words and English words. I think the bright colors and the rhyme scheme were very catchy, and it did a good job at sharing the traditions of this Mexican holiday. I would definitely include this book in my own classroom library.

Teaching Ideas

I think this story would be perfect paired along with an art activity. This story can be used to teach about the Mexican holiday, and then kids can create their own sugar skulls and write about the significance of the holiday and why it is celebrated. This story can also be used to teach children some Spanish words, since the book includes both Spanish and English.
