Summary
This moving children’s book explains the similarities and differences between cultures in a kid-friendly way. Two penpals from different walks of life communicate through letters to teach readers how we are all the same as humans though we live lives that look different. The characters, Kailash from India, and Elliot from America, write letters to one another discussing family, friendship, and daily routine. This book boasts vivid images all throughout the story.

Personal Response
I love how this book introduces other cultures in a judgement-free perspective. I want to note that the newer editions are this book have come out within the last few years as well. I noticed that the book used a lot of comparisons on each page. One page would show and talk about taking a bus to school, and the next page would be the other kid’s reply showing their version of a bus. The organization makes it very easy for children to understand and differentiate in between.
Teaching Ideas
This book is a great introduction to an “All Around the World” unit. This book compares life in America to life in India. For example, the book talks about how in India, Kailash lives with his immediate family and grandparents. Whereas Elliot just lives with his parents. The story talks about the differences and similarities of Kailash and Elliot’s school routines. We could dive deeper into school routines in different countries, and maybe get to write our own penpals from another school!
