Personal Response
I was moved by this story and the beautiful illustrations that helped bring it to life. This is a remarkable story to share because it reveals the unfortunate history of America and how Ruby and her family were able to take a stand for their community to help pave a path of opportunities and acceptance for all. This book was definitely a window and sliding door text for me and it reminded me of how important it is for all of us to work together to keep our world inclusive and safe for everyone.
Teaching Ideas
In my teaching, I would integrate this book into the social studies and writing curriculum. I would read the book and then facilitate a whole group discussion about what segregation was during this time in history and have students discuss how Ruby and other African American citizens were negatively impacted by these unjust laws. Then, I would have students complete a writing task, where they write about a time that they felt nervous and afraid and how they worked to overcome it like Ruby did.
