Summary

This inspiring true story explores four African American women’s journeys to put the first men in space. The story discusses how they overcame gender and racial barriers to succeed in their careers. Neil Armstrong stepping onto the moon was a big step, but this accomplishment was even bigger for Dorothy, Mary, Katherine, and Christine for all their hard work. The moon landing was a success. These women learned that with hard work, perseverance, and a love for math anything is possible.

Personal Response

I enjoyed this amazing story. This story allows students to learn about the struggles people of color and women faced during this time. They get to see how these women didn’t back down and continued following their dreams. This story included numerous useful tools for students besides the wonderful storyline, such as a glossary. I also liked how at the end of the story it included a timeline and a short autobiography about each of the women. This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend.

Teaching Ideas

I would definitely read this book to my class. When discussing black history month I would teach my students about the unfair laws people of color had to face. We would discuss how people of color were segregated and all the troubles they faced. Then leading into Women’s History Month I would share this story with my class. I would have them research NASA and the Space Race. We would discuss how these women made a difference in our history and the importance of their accomplishments.
