Summary

This biography tells the story of how Nelson Mandela became one of the world’s greatest leaders during the Twentieth-Century in the post-Apartheid era. During this time in South Africa, the country was segregated. After attending college, Mandela became a lawyer who fought for the rights of South Africans. Despite the setbacks he faced, such as being imprisoned, Mandela fought for what he believed in and eventually became President. Mandela is portrayed as a symbol of hope throughout this story.

Personal Response

The illustrations and use of bright and bold colors highlight the struggles Mandela faced. These illustrations allow the reader to feel fully immersed in the story. While reading this story, I made many connections to other world leaders who have fought against social injustice, such as Gandhi and Rosa Parks. The author takes you on a journey of Mandela’s remarkable life. Learning about the events of Mandela’s life was moving because although he faced many hardships, his hope for freedom grew.

This biography can be integrated into various subjects such as history, reading, and writing. For example, this story may be used when learning about powerful leaders who fought against social injustices. Or, it may be used when teaching about the Twentieth-Century and the post-Apartheid era.
