Summary
Alma Thomas was a very artistic and passionate girl. She was unable to attend school as only whites were allowed. Despite this challenge her parents “filled their home with books and created their own place of learning”. Alma was determined to learn and when she grew up she attended college, studying art. Schools still faced segregation so she brought art to her own neighborhood, teaching children at her home. After teaching she focused on her own art with features displayed in a museum in NYC.

Personal Response
This book was wonderfully written and illustrated. It showcased the life of Alma Thomas, an African-American painter. Despite facing segregation, she was able to follow what she loved and share her passion with others. Her ability to stay positive and inspire others especially during a time period where she was not accepted due to the color of her skin is powerful. Alma left a lasting impact on the world as her work has been displayed in museums, in honor.
Teaching Ideas
This book can be utilized in the classroom to showcase an important figure in history. Students can discuss what they noticed about the book, such as inequalities faced during this time period. Students can be asked to find the main theme of the text and supporting evidence, for example the theme being perseverance and ways that Alma overcame segregation she faced during this time. Another fun activity for students would be researching works of art from Alma Thomas and analyzing her art!
