Personal Response

This book was a very cute and playful book to read and look at. The illustrations are bright and appealing, and the book itself has a wonderful message about imperfections and determination. This book reminded me of the book I reviewed last week called “Dim Sum, Here We Come!”, as they have similar messages, characters and themes. I can relate to this book in the form of cooking with my family or friends and trying to learn from them to create the “perfect” dish.

Teaching Ideas

I would read aloud this book to the class and then have a discussion about traditions or specific foods/meals students make and/or eat with their family. We also would talk about perseverance, determination and strategies to finding solutions to problems. At the end of the book, there is a recipe for making Amy’s family Bao, so I would have students make this recipe and try the Bao themselves for a real life connection, as well as STEM for the cooking and measuring part of the activity.
