Personal Response
This is a lighthearted story about a little girl and her family. This book is a great tool to use to show children how African American people take care of their hair. It is also a great story to show African American children to not feel weird for wearing a bonnet on their hair and that is part of their everyday routine. I enjoyed this story and it made me smile reading it. I loved how the story included every member of the family.
Teaching Ideas
To use this book in a lesson, I would teach about how everyone has different routines. Each family has a routine each day and these routines surround their culture. I would also teach that not every one’s hair is the same and we take care of it in different ways. I would emphasize the importance that just because something is different from what you may do it does not mean that is is not normal or special.
