Summary

This is shown through the repeated line, “Black is my color.” As the story continues, the author aims to incorporate historical figures and events within the African American culture, showing that black is powerful.

The author creatively discusses how the color black is found in many different objects ranging from stones to birds, to shoes, etc. As the story continues, the author discusses how “black” is a culture with a history. I enjoyed how the author discusses historical figures such as MLK and Thurgood Marshall. By making light of these figures, the author is showing that “black” is powerful and strong. I enjoyed this story because I believe that it aims to bring people together.

Teaching Ideas

This story may be used when discussing historical figures and movements within the Civil Rights movement, when discussing MLK’s dream, or when discussing Black History Month. This story aims to teach others about African American culture and history. Additionally, this story could be used in a social-emotional lesson. As the child is reflecting on the color of her skin, she continues to grow pride and confidence in who she is. Teachers may use this story when teaching one how to be proud.
