Summary
Brown: The Many Shades of Love is a debut picture book for the author and illustrator that celebrates all the beautiful browns in one child’s family. This story is a loving ode in which a little boy introduces the members of his family and describes each one how he sees them. The child compares each member to something that is a shade of brown – including himself. Each description is different and is what makes the family special and unique.

Personal Response
I think this is a heartwarming book that is easy to read with a fun rhyme scheme. It has a strong message of family, and appreciating what makes us special. The descriptions the boy uses are adorable and add positive connotations to the uniqueness of each family member. The illustrations and words are simple, yet beautiful. I have not read a book like this before, but I plan to order one for my kindergarten classroom.
Teaching Ideas
This book would be a good fit for younger children, especially kindergarteners. It could help introduce differences and how they make each person special. While this book discusses physical differences, it could lead into discussions about other differences such as interests and characteristics and how they make us unique. Students could also end the day by drawing a picture of themselves and adding words to it to describe how they are different or what they feel is special about them.
