Theme(s):
Perseverance
Personal Response
This story is a wonderful story showing family tradition and perseverance. It shows students that you may not always succeed the first time doing something, or even the next few times after that. I also love the phrase the mother says, “Practice makes progress” which could be a phrase the class uses and is displayed in the classroom.
Teaching Ideas
After reading, students can write about a time that they did not succeed doing something the first time. Did they give up easily or did they try again? What did they do to get persevering?
