Personal Response

This is an honest depiction of big brothers and their little sisters. It is sweet to see Carmela get to do what her brother does despite his initial unwillingness to include her. Carmela’s brother is a great representation of a typical big brother. Although he isn’t overly accepting of her addition to his trip he does come to her assistance in the end to provide her with a solution to her problem. The illustrations appear almost textured appealing to the emotions of each page.

Teaching Ideas

This book is a great way to teach empathy. This story shows a character going from unaccepting to helpful and caring. This is a great story to share for those who may have older siblings that they struggle to connect to, or even younger siblings that they struggle to connect to. The story does show two children completing errands and walking independently through town which may be relatable to some children, or informative for those who are unable to relate to such experiences.
