Personal Response

I enjoyed the lyrical genius of this book. The pictures made the words come alive and although this book was not a mirror for me, it was a great window into the culture of others. The cast of characters is very inclusive, and the main character is African American. Illustrations depict characters of various ages, races, religions, and different physical abilities working together to create a better future. The book emphasizes friendship and collaboration among everyone.

Teaching Ideas

This book would go great with our social studies curriculum when we learn about helping our communities. I plan on reading this book to fuel the the start of brainstorming ideas for how to help our community. I think many of my students will resonate with its message to help others in need and help our community in any way we can.
