Summary

In the book, Chloe’s Lunar New Year, Chloe and her family prepare for the annual Lunar New Year to celebrate their culture.  They prepare for the celebration by buying new shoes, decorating envelopes in red, and making yummy Taiwanese foods like turnip cake.  Chloe and her family celebrate the Lunar New Year with other family members, like A-má, her grandmother.  Chloe enjoys the festive celebration and appreciates her culture as she spends time with her family.

Personal Response

I enjoyed reading, Chloe’s Lunar New Year, because I got to learn about Chloe and her family as they celebrate the Lunar New Year.  It was so interesting to read about the different traditions Chloe’s family does to celebrate the Lunar New Year.  I enjoyed learning about the different dishes they made and the special things they do to celebrate with their family members.  The story helps readers learn about different family traditions and emphasizes the importance of being together.

Teaching Ideas

The book, Chloe’s Lunar New Year, can be used when learning about different traditions or different cultures around the world.  As a class, we would participate in the traditions shown in the book, such as decorating red envelopes, having oranges for good luck, and evening making some traditional dishes.  This book would also invite students to share and discuss about family traditions they celebrate.
