Summary

This biography tells the story of Teresa Carreño who loved to play the piano at a young age. She and her family had to leave Venezuela because of the war in her home. She came to New York where barely anyone spoke Spanish and the Civil War was raging. She found it difficult to find happiness in her music with the problems in the world. She was asked to play for Abraham Lincoln to bring his family happiness and she used her creativity to do so.

Personal Response

I really liked this lyrical story that shows the uncertainty of living in a new place especially while war is raging on. The art demonstrates how her music changed the world from a solemn gray to colorful hope and happiness. It shows readers that it is possible to persevere and flourish through uncertain times. Although the story is told lyrically, the author also includes a historical note to give more background for readers to have a better understanding of the setting.

Teaching Ideas

As an SEL activity students would be able to discuss moments in their life when they were worried or uncertain about something. Then they can draw and write about what they like to do that helps them to feel better about their situation. As for a social studies mini-inquiry students can research the Civil War in the US and the war that effected Teresa in Venezuela. Then they can compare and contrast the two wars.
