Personal Response

I really enjoyed this story and think it would be perfect for Pre-K-Kindergarten level. It is such a powerful tool of representation, specifically for young black girls showing that if they can dream it they can do it. These women including Mae Jemison, Maya Angelou, and Oprah Winfrey have accomplished great things in their lifetimes and are great role models and inspirations for everyone. Additionally, it is a great mini-history lesson with a fact about each of these leaders on every page.

Teaching Ideas

Though this is seemingly a bedtime story, this book could have a variety of benefits in the classroom. The first idea that came to mind was an introduction to a discussion of careers. All kids have dreams of what they want to be when they grow up, and this book really emphasizes to children that they truly can be anything they set their minds to. Additionally, it can be used during Black History Month to teach kids about Black Women Leaders that have had powerful impacts and shaped the country.
