Summary

This encouraging book follows a little girl as she explores different jobs. Each page of the book is a girl introducing new jobs that she can do from a doctor, a scientist, an astronaut or the president. This book allows girls to realize they can be anyone they want to be and do anything they set their minds to. This book also encourages students and girls to begin thinking of different jobs they may want to do when they get older. The book inspires girls to never give up on their dreams.

Personal Response

I really enjoyed reading Girls Like Me. This book is so inspiring to young girls. It inspires young girls that they can do whatever they put their mind to and achieve it. Each page starts with “I can be..” The book starts with dedicating the book to any girl that may be a “first” either in their community or their family. This book can be inspiring for all different types of girls and get students. I really loved how the book includes a variety of different professions to get students thinking.

Teaching Ideas

Although it is focused mainly on girls, it can be for boys too and get students thinking about what they want to do when they grow up. This book is great for elementary students. I would start by asking students what they want to be when they grow up. Then read the story to them and open discussion about different professions they are interested in. For an activity, students can draw themselves as that profession. Then present their drawing to the class and talk about it.
