Summary

This story is a picture book that uses the colors of the rainbow to highlight Islamic traditions. Each color of the rainbow is given a special meaning as the readers learn about food, clothing, and culture. A young girl describes Muslim culture by using color and poetry.

Theme(s):

Family, Religion, Faith

Personal Response

I really enjoyed the simplicity of this book. Each color is used to describe an aspect of the Muslim culture and religion, which makes understanding and learning about it very easy. I think this would be an awesome book to read to young children who are unaware of the Islamic culture. The simplicity of the book will teach them about the religion and culture, so that when they see people who may be Islamic they are aware of the culture as it is different than their own.

Teaching Ideas

I think this story can be used to teach about rhyme scheme since it does use poetry to describe different aspects of the Islamic culture. I think it can also be used to teach the different colors of the rainbow, as well as help in short term memory for younger kids. For example, the teacher could create a matching worksheet where students will have to match the color with what is was used to describe in the story.
