Personal Response
I believe this book gives great insight into the language barrier that people experience when coming from different countries to America. It beautifully shows the love Daisy has for her yeh-yeh and would continue to try anything for him to smile. The love and connection between these two characters even with the language barrier was great to read and take in the illustrations.
Teaching Ideas
This book could be a great stepping stone of an introduction into the different heritage and cultures, one specifically being the country of China. The teacher could introduce this book and have the students connect the similarities and differences between Daisy and her yeh-yeh. It gives the students an opportunity to reflect on their prior knowledge and bring in their own personal experiences of their heritage and culture.
