Family, Pride, Persistance, Self-Love

Personal Response

‘Hair Love’ is a tribute to the love you have for your natural hair and what makes you stand out along with the special relationship between fathers and daughters. The natural hair of African Americans is often a symbol of pride and self-esteem, such as Zuri’s in Hair Love. I thought that the book itself and the meaning behind it was very sweet. It is a heartwarming story to appreciate your family and love yourself for who you are.

Teaching Ideas

After reading the story, I would have the students create their own self-portrait. By having the students create their own self-portraits, it helps them to make connections around the world of understanding that people may look different then you but it does not mean they should be treated differently. It teaches the students to understand everyone’s differences and to be proud of who you are. It allows them to understand differences in others and accept them.
