Personal Response

This story made me feel good! It’s about diversity, family, relationships, and self-love. This showed me that people do their hair with their religion in mind. The fact that the father and daughter do this together makes it even more heart felt. I enjoy the diversity in the illustrations as well. There were different people with so many different hairstyles and some kids even had two moms or two dads! This book does more than discuss diversity, it also shows how different peoples lifestyles are.

Teaching Ideas

After reading this story with students, a fun and heart warming way to teach this lesson is to have the students write and draw a tradition that they share with their moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandmas, grandpas, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. It can be a haircut or hairstyle, similar to the story we just read! It could be food that you both like and cook together, drawing similarly, anything that is shared by a loved one and celebrates the students culture!
