Summary
This book shows the growth of a young Black girl and how she has consistently did the same thing over and over again and as she gets older she understands why she is doing it more and more. She joins her family and community in a protest in which they lift their hands up and together stand up to resistance and strength. This action is something that started from a young age and continued becoming more important.

Personal Response
This book is absolutely beautiful. It shows the many things that can be represented by this young girl as she grows up and then eventually comes down to her attending a protest in which she stand up for her rights. This shows young children and even adults that we can stand up for what we believe in no matter how young or old we are.
Teaching Ideas
After reading this book, I would have my students work in small groups of 2-3 students each and have them research what protests are. After having them do their research, I would have the groups choose a protest from history and research it more in depth (obviously I would limit it because of the age of the students) and have them create a small presentation on the protest that they researched.
