Personal Response
This book was lovely to read. The illustrations were beautiful and the story had many amazing qualities. I felt that it was very educational and taught a lot about Holi and the traditions surrounding it. It also taught a great lesson on forgiveness. Although specific, the story can be relatable to many in that individuals of all cultures celebrate holidays based upon their personal beliefs and many experience unhappiness or disappointment when things do not go their way…myself included!
Teaching Ideas
Using this book in the classroom would be a great way to start a conversation about different religions and cultures and which holidays are celebrated in each. Students could discuss Hinduism and Holi and move into a conversation about the different holidays each student may celebrate. The book would also teach a great lesson on moving past difficult feelings when things do not go the way we want. This could lead into a group discussion about big feelings and how to properly deal with them.
