Personal Response

I loved the meaning behind this story. Although someone may look different from other people, does not make them less of a person. I think it is so important for young children to understand that being different is a beautiful thing which is exactly what this story focuses on. Children should be reminded of who they are and their culture and that it is such a unique and beautiful thing.

Teaching Ideas

After reading this book to the class, I will discuss with the students how people come from different families and cultures and how everyone is different in their own ways. For younger students, they can find images online that represent who they are and where they are from or they can draw a picture. For older students, they can go home and talk to their families about their cultures and ancestors. Then do some research and write about who they are, traditions they take part in, holidays, etc.
