Personal Response

I absolutely loved this book. Racism and segregation is always a large topic for our littlest learners to comprehend. This book introduces this part of history in a way that children can understand- through a child’s eyes. This was a moving autobiography, even for me to read as an adult. The desegregation era in New Orleans, Louisiana, is a window for me. It’s very educational to experience bravery and inequality through the eyes of a child and well-loved author.

Teaching Ideas

I would use this story to introduce segregation and civil rights. This could pair well with other historical figures such as Jackie Robinson, which is often taught in schools as well. This story would make a great compare/contrast lesson for how we live our lives today, and the injustices people still do face. Comparing and contrasting can help students understand the severity and importance of civil rights events in the 1960s.
