Personal Response
This book is such a positive way to promote self-worth and diversity. By using affirmations and diverse illustrations, children can experience what makes them and others special. Building self-worth needs to be explicitly taught and talked about with children. As an educator, using ‘teacher language’ is so essential. For example, when teaching math, calling your students mathematicians is a way of using teacher language. If students believe in themselves, they can accomplish so much more.
Teaching Ideas
Following a read aloud of I Believe I Can, students will create an affirmation poster. Students can choose up to five statements that make them believe in themselves. Write and illustrate those affirmations on construction or poster paper. Students can bring in photos of themselves from home to personalize their posters!
