Summary

This book celebrates a special connection that crosses time zones and oceans as Popo and her granddaughter hold each other in their hearts forever. When a young girl and her family emigrate from Taiwan to America, she leaves behind her beloved popo, her grandmother. She misses her popo every day, but even if their visits are fleeting, their love is ever true and strong.

Personal Response

I enjoyed reading this book and loved how it was illustrated. I liked how the author created this book based on her own experiences emigrating from Taiwan. I think this is a hopeful book as we see the the girl growing and her popo slowly aging.

Teaching Ideas

I would have an interactive read-aloud of I Dream of Popo with my class. After the read-aloud we would do activities such as an interview. For this activity children could pick someone who lives far from them and interview them about their day. In addition, children can also pick a favorite family recipe like Pope’s dumplings to share with the class.
