Summary

This is a story about a Spanish  boy who wants to be a mermaid regardless of social norms. He shares his dreams and identity with his abuela. At first he only dresses as a mermaid only when he is alone.

Theme(s):

Identity, Relationships, Acceptance, and Love

Personal Response

This is a very moving book and was beautiful to read about. Julian’s story is something that many children go through and for children to be able to connect to this and relate if they know someone or are personally going through something similar.

Teaching Ideas

I would use this book to incorporate something to help students to build connections and talk about what they would do if they were in Julian’s position and how they would feel.
