Summary

This book is about a young girl who starts to become insecure about her body hair. Her friends point out that she has hair above her lip and it makes her look like a cat. She had never really paid attention to those details of her body before. With the guidance of her family, she is able to learn about why hair grows in other places than just our heads.

Theme(s):

Body Positivity, Self Image, Family

Personal Response

I thought this book was great for body positivity. Kids growing up are bound to notice things about their bodies that are different from others. This book guides children through working with adults and is a great celebration of differences and bodies in general! Our bodies do so much more than just grow hair!

Teaching Ideas

Using craft tools such as yarn, crayons and paper, have student construct a self portrait. They can glue yarn where hair is on their bodies and customize their skin color using “Around The World” crayons from Crayola. This can lead into a conversation about the purpose of hair on our bodies and why it’s okay to have it in different spots. This discussion can lead into the things that make us unique!
