Summary
In a classroom filled with sandwiches, four students stand out with their homemade, culturally-specific lunches. As they are about to eat, classmates around them are making faces, noises, and comments about their lunches. The children give in to the peer pressure and decide to ask their parents to make a sandwich like everyone else, but they soon realize how boring that truly is. Sure enough, the children who only bring saniwches also realize how boring it is and want something different!

If find this book to be a very good confidence booster for some children. This book will allow students to not be ashamed of bringing in something that may not be deemed as “normal”. Being different has greater advantages than anything else and this books embraces those things. It shows children to not give into peer pressure and kick to the beat of their own drum.
Teaching Ideas
After reading this story, children can do a fun craft where they make a lunch that is in their culture! For example, you can use construction paper to make rolls of sushi, or pipe cleaners to make noodles or spaghetti! The supplies are endless and you would be surprised to see how many children eat those things in the neighborhood!
