Summary
Throughout this book, students learn about the life and dreams of the first African American woman to travel to space!
Mae has big dreams from a young age to be an astronaut. She imagines herself dancing and floating in space. Mae questions if she is able to do it, but her family was right there to support her and tell her she can do anything as long as she works hard for it. Despite negative comments from her teachers and classmates, Mae never gives up to reach for the stars!

Dream Big, Be Brave, Never Give Up/Work Hard
Personal Response
Personally, I feel that this is a very encouraging and powerful book for young students. The overall theme is to never give up on your dreams. Many students can relate to this. Also, I am sure students have been told “are you sure you want to do that?” or “Why don’t you try something else?” whether it’s a sport or an instrument. Many children can relate to feeling like Mae in this story even if it is not because of their skin color. Mae’s journey teaches kids to be who they are and be confident.
Teaching Ideas
After the read aloud, I would draw a rocket ship on chart paper and have students write their biggest dream on it. I would allow students to talk with their classmates about what they wrote and explain why they want to achieve that dream. Students will write their dream and three actions they can take in order to achieve the dream on a piece of paper shaped like a rocket ship. Students will do a gallery walk to see others ideas. Students can also learn about the real Mae through research.
