Mama’s Amazing Cover Cloth

Illustrator:

Summary

This delightful, yet simplistic book takes readers through a journey of Ghanian culture in looking at the different ways in which the traditional cover cloth is used. While reading, you get to observe the story through the perspective of a little girl who watches her mother use her cover cloth in a variety of ways, whether it be to wash the dishes, wrap it around her waist, or wrap her baby sister in. While doing this, she learns of the importance of the cloth.

Personal Response

I really enjoyed this book, as well as the illustrations. The pictures were colorful and very detailed. This was a very simple book, and it didn’t have much of a storyline; which is okay, because it makes the story unique. One thing I wish the story had incorporated was  more of a story, where there were emotions that you could connect to to really try and relate to the characters.

Teaching Ideas

I think this book would be perfect for a thematic unit. You could use this book as the center of the unit, and develop a variety of lessons and projects that go along with the book. One project students could do is create their own cover cloth, and describe ways in which they would use the cloth. Another idea is students could pick something that someone in their family uses in a variety of different ways, and they can relate it back to this story.
