Summary

This biography tells the amazing story of Lilly Ann Granderson who was born into slavery and learned literacy as a child. Although risky she began teaching other children who were slaves how to read and write. She stopped for a while when she was sold but then missed teaching others. It was riskier in her new home in the deep south to teach but she created a secret school and helped hundreds of enslaved people of all ages to read and write. Even after her emancipation she continued to teach.

Personal Response

This book allows you to vividly imagine what is happening while building up strong emotions during critical events. For instance since it is a biography you understand that there are very real consequences for Lilly’s actions, yet she continues to teach in secret. You hope that she doesn’t get caught but since it isn’t a fairytale it’s a large possibility. When she does get caught the author makes you wait to find out it turns out ok, just like Lilly had to wait.
