Personal Response

I really enjoyed this story. The illustrations were very detailed and truly did an excellent job of demonstrating characters of many cultures. I categorized this book as African American, but it could have fit into multiple different cultures based upon the contents. I think it taught a great lesson on not judging others based upon what they eat and to instead take the opportunity to learn about their background. I also really enjoyed the addition of a glossary in the back of the book.

Teaching Ideas

This book can be used to teach many excellent lessons. It can start a great discussion on different types of food in which students can learn about food from different cultures. I think it would be fun to have families come to the classroom and bring in traditional food from their cultures. Students can try all types of dishes and will hopefully come away from the experience having found something they really enjoyed. I believe this would be best done with a more mature group of students.
