Summary

Thuy feels “double different” even though every kid has a unique perspective. She was born in America to Vietnamese parents. Thuy goes home angry after a bully teases her one day. Thuy follows a bird on a fantastical journey. What if she could fly? What if she ran like a deer and growled like a bear? She follows her mothers’ snow tracks back to their embrace. Like Thuy, the three of them create beautiful, strong, and brave beings.

Theme(s):

Self Expression, Cultural Inclusion, & a sense of belonging

Personal Response

This book helped me understand environmental issues and the need for sustainability. Thuy’s struggle with self-identity and cultural acceptance resonated with me, and I reflected on my own. I liked the book’s creative expression call. My Footprints taught me to value others’ perspectives and build inclusive connections, which made me more compassionate. I’m glad I got to experience this book’s powerful combination of weighty ideas and engaging narrative.

Teaching Ideas

After reading the book aloud, you may lead a conversation about the environmental consequences of our activities. Next, have students use paint to make footprints. Have them write/draw one small action they can take to help the environment on each footprint, such as saving water or recycling. Display these footprints in the classroom to demonstrate their environmental responsibility. This supports the book’s message and motivates kids to think critically and take action to preserve the earth.
