Summary

This is a story about a little girl who is from a biracial family. She is half African American and half white. This is a book about celebrating everyone’s differences. Diversity is the main theme of the story. The story describes how all of us look different but that is what makes us special. Additionally, the story explains that just because we look different doesn’t mean that we aren’t the same on the inside.

Theme(s):

Friendship, celebration, diversity

Personal Response

I loved how this story shared diversity in a lighthearted way. The book spoke about important topics but geared them toward younger children. I loved how the book highlighted that we might look different by our skin color or hair but on the inside we all are the same. This is a great story to read to lower elementary students.

Teaching Ideas

I would use this book at the beginning of the school year to highlight how we treat everyone the same in this classroom. I strive to build a community in my classroom and I think that this story would be a great conversation starter. I would use this story to teach about diversity. I would do a lesson on how although we might look different from our classmates around us, we are all the same and the way we look makes us unique.
