Summary

This story is about all different types of kids who are unique in their own way. The main character Nick has new glasses that he is embarrassed of at first. When he considers code-switching, he runs into his friend Sarah who has new braces and she compliments his glasses. This allows Nick to realize that everyone has differences which makes them unique. He comes to appreciate everyone and their diversities as he learns more about them.

Theme(s):

Society, Friendship, Bravery

Personal Response

Though the recommended reading level suggests K-3, I believe this story would work best in a Kindergarten or 1st grade classroom. It was a great way to break down the basics of diversities and why we should appreciate and respect every individual. I thought the story was a very great way for children to learn about diversities, especially if they live in an environment with minimal differences. The colorful illustrations were very kid friendly.

Teaching Ideas

This would be a great book to use on one of the first few days of Kindergarten. It can be paired with creating the classroom rule list as it is a social emotional lesson for children to treat everyone with respect, no matter their differences.  This can teach children that they should not feel ashamed of their differences, but rather feel proud of them. Additionally, this book can tie in with the fact that the classroom is a safe space for every student no matter what.
