Summary

Pepe and his friend are excited about attending their first Hispanic Day Parade in the city. The parade is one filled with music, dancing and food from various Hispanic counties! From Dominica to Honduras, Pepe is excited to be sharing this moment with his friends and family as they celebrate the things that make their Hispanic heritage amazing. By the end of the day, Pepe reminisces on the time spent with his friends and family, as he begins the countdown for the next festival.

Personal Response

I really enjoyed reading this text, as it is such a great representation of Hispanic culture for children. I think this text provides a window for students to see themselves in Pepe’s shoes. Even if they do not connect to the parade/festival aspect of the text, they definitely can connect to see their families culture illustrated and spoken of throughout.

Teaching Ideas

I would connect this text to a multicultural activity, where students can go home and ask their families where they are from. I would also use this as a reference text during Hispanic Heritage month or even Caribbean Heritage month. I like that the inside of the book has different images of flags, and throughout the book there are Spanish terms. I would have an activity where students practice saying the terms and spend time learning about the countries mentioned in the text, and their flags.
