Summary

The author wrote this story with the help of her son Phoenix to share the challenges he faced growing up gay. He loved playing with dolls, dressing up, and Pow Wow dancing. Others made fun of him while his brother defended him. After confessing to his family they accepted him and taught him about Niizh Manidoowag. This is a belief in their culture that someone can have two spirits and so this makes him extra special. He then accepted himself and made friends with those who accepted him.

Personal Response

I really loved this heartwarming story. I especially loved that Phoenix’s mother wrote it with support from him for accuracy. It is inspirational for everyone to know that they are not alone in something especially when they see others bullying them for their differences. This book may be inspirational to others who are be dealing with the same issues who can find solace in knowing that some people part of the Anishinaabe culture may consider them remarkable.

Teaching Ideas

In connection to a social studies inquiry project, students can use this book as one example of a specific Native American group’s beliefs. As a class we can discuss in depth the belief mentioned in the book. They can then explore more about Anishinaabe culture and their beliefs or they can explore the beliefs of other Native people. Overall they can compare and contrast the various beliefs they composed about different Native groups.
