Summary

This story is about a Native American celebration. The story follows a family that attends the powwow. We learn about the various celebrations that follow this. The main character in the story wants to dance in the powwow celebration very badly. We as readers see the various dances they do and the music they listen to.

Theme(s):

celebration, family, culture

Personal Response

I enjoyed this story because I learned about a culture I am not really familiar with. I loved how the author took us as readers throughout the entire day to see what a powwow celebration is like. I loved how they included all parts of the celebration from the music to the dances. I loved how we also learned why this is a celebration they do, the culture behind it.

Teaching Ideas

One lesson idea I have is to teach students about celebrations in different cultures. I would use this story as the introduction. I would teach them about the powwow, then have students make their own presentations on the celebrations in their cultures. Each student would present their celebration in a creative way. This could be performing a dance or song that is involved in their culture.
