Summary

Ravi never minded being the smallest in his family. Until one day, his short arms can’t reach the monkey bars, he can’t find anyone during hide-and-seek, AND he’s too little to ride the big slide. Ravi is so mad-so furious- that he can’t control his temper anymore and he turns into a ferocious, roaring TIGER! Tigers can do anything they want! But who wants to play with a growling, wild tiger who won’t share or behave? Ravi is about to discover something very important about voicing his feelings.

Personal Response

This book does a wonderful job at describing feeling angry and some strategies to help to deal with anger. I enjoyed reading this book and believe it has a great social-emotional learning component to it. The illustrations also captured my attention when they switched from the entire picture being colored, to only Ravi as a tiger being colored and everything else black and white. I thought this was a very smart and thought out detail to convey that Ravi was so angry he didn’t really “see”.

Teaching Ideas

I would use this book in the beginning of the school year as a read aloud to the whole class in order to talk about feelings, and especially the emotions of anger or feeling mad. This book provides an opportunity for a social-emotional lesson to take place and children could share ways that make them feel better or strategies to use when they get angry. We then could write these on an anchor chart and use this in the future to refer to when a student is upset/angry.
