Señorita Mariposa is a wonderful story about a monarch butterfly whose extraordinary 3,000-mile journey spans the United States, Mexico, and Canada. It introduces kids to the butterfly life cycle, explains the annual migration of monarch butterflies, and discusses the importance of protecting our planet. Personal Response
Since students love to read books about animals and the planet, I thought this was a great story to intertwine both concepts together. I love how it talks about the circle of life in a way that children would not be afraid or scared while still integrating culture. I also like how the book is formatted in two languages for diverse learners and can be easily read based on the way it was produced. I believe this would make a great book for any of the younger kids to read.
Teaching Ideas
The students would be able to create a 3D model of the earth using common household items such as paper towel rolls, aluminum foil etc. They can paint them to look like the earth and then we would discuss how we would protect the earth we created. The students would then be able to work together to create something to keep their earth safe. This could include something like a shoebox, a manmade house, or anything they think of to help protect the earth.
