This story is about a family who gathers at Grandmother’s house every Sunday to share a home cooked meal. Once the young boy, who is the narrator of the story, is old enough Grandmother tells him that it is time for him to start learning their traditions. Personal Response
If I had to use one work to describe this book it would be “FUN”. This book had such vivid and lively illustration that captivated the reader. It felt like you could almost smell what they were cooking as they were explaining it. I loved how the traditions were being shared not only between grandmother and grandson, but also between the author and the reader. The reader feels like they are right in the kitchen with them, and it is such a arm and comforting read to share.
Teaching Ideas
One activity that would be fun for students to go along with this text is to have them share a traditional family recipe from their culture or family. They can all share their own recipe, we can all share them with each other, and then each student can get a copy of their friend recipes and put them all together in one big cookbook. Each student could also bring in the prepared food to share this part of their lives with the rest of the class. It would be a great way to share culture with us.
