Summary
This text is told from a child’s perspective and emphasizes how being classified as “bilingual” is something that all people should feel proud about. Given that the narrator is a child, the text also encourages readers to step foot in a bilingual student’s shoes and learn how enjoyable it is to be able to speak two different languages.
Theme(s):
Pride, Discovery, & Identity
Personal Response
I really enjoyed reading this text because I have always looked up to people who can speak more than one language, especially because I can only speak a little bit of Spanish outside speaking English. I think learning another language is awesome and enables students to go above and beyond the average “normal” to enhance their knowledge even further.
Teaching Ideas
Following the reading, the students and I will brainstorm together a list of symbols that represent different things about them that makes them unique. I would then make a list of the symbols we mentioned on a sheet of anchor chart. Next, they will be provided with their very own superhero shield so that they can draw all the different symbols that represent their superpowers. After, the students would then write a few sentences about their superpower to then share with the class upon finishing.
