Summary

This book is about how one voice can make all the difference, whether you’re Black, Muslim, Jewish, Asian, White, the cultures are endless. This author is encouraging children to speak up and unite with others when they see that something is not fair or if something needs to be fixed. Children make their voices heard if their name isn’t pronounced correctly or if a rule isn’t fair or if its old as time, SPEAK UP! As Paul (2020) states, “Justice comes when we are bold.” (p. 10).

Theme(s):

Fairness/Unfairness, Overcoming Adversity, Taking a Stand

Personal Response

The reason why this book is so great, is because of all the cultures that are included. I have never seen such diverse illustrations in a children’s book, that’s why I was unable to select just one culture that this books discusses. You see Asian, Black, Muslim, White and many more children speaking up for what is right and just. That’s a message that I think all people should take away from this book.

Teaching Ideas

If my class and I were reading this book, I would pose an important question to my students: “Was there ever a time where you wanted to speak up for yourself, your friends, or your family?”. I would allow them to write, draw, or even talk about their responses and reflect on that moment. Whether it is big or small, when you speak up it is brave and bold! Not only does this reflect the story, but it can also help the students grow to use their words when things are frustrating or unfair.
