Summary

This beautiful book is about a grandmother and granddaughter. The grandmother teaches her granddaughter about different types of stories through stories while making star quilts, and planting and caring for a garden. The grandmother tells these stories for her bedtime stories. The grandmother takes a great approach in explaining that children are sacred like sacred seeds in a family garden. This book introduces Dakota ways and explains generational ties at the end.

Personal Response

I really like this book. It has a great balance of educational and teaching value versus showing the love between the grandmother and granddaughter. This book explains different things about the Dakota people which allows this book to teach us about their ways in a picture book. This book was beautiful showing the love and traditions that occur between the family members.

Teaching Ideas

After reading this book aloud to the class. We would read other books about other cultures. After reading the books, we would do some research on my students backgrounds and their cultures. Once we complete the research, the students will make some type of project showing and representing their culture and something that they really love about their culture.
