Summary
This book is about a Mirha’s first day of school. It follows her through the day as she introduces herself and people are unable to correctly pronounce her name. This book shows the support of a loved one encouraging the child to not change her name but take pride in it, and expect others to respect her name as well. The illustrations show emotions and the various mispronunciations of Mirha’s name. This book is a great representation of self-courage and taking a stand.

Personal Response
This book speaks to the internal struggle of a child who may want to correct an adult or peer but is unsure how to do so. I found it important that the author showed the child’s struggle in wanting to be called by the correct name, but how the child should not really have to make people respect her name without changing it. This book can act as a mirror to a lot of children from various different cultures.
Teaching Ideas
This is a great first day of school read aloud. This can be used as an icebreaker for the first day of school. This book speaks to the importance of pronouncing people’s names correctly and having the courage to correct anyone who mispronounces your name. The sense of courage and pride that is taught in this book is a great precedent to set on the first day of school as well. I think this is a great way to get to know the children and have other children inquire about other’s experiences
