Theme(s):

Bravery, Fear, Acceptance

Personal Response

This story does a beautiful job of showing stereotyping. Although The Ghoul looked scary, he was just as afraid of Hasan as Hasan could have been of him. The Ghoul who scared so many different villagers was the one who was actually afraid. It does a wonderful job of demonstrating “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover”.

Teaching Ideas

This story could be a great way of introducing new books into the students library. By reading this story the students can understand that you can’t always judge a book by it’s cover. Hasan and the other villagers were told to be so scared of The Ghoul. However, just because it was scary it was just as afraid of them. This can be a great doorway to show children, just because they do not like the way a book looks or starts it’s good to give it a chance cause they never know what lies ahead!
