Summary
This book is a continuation of the book “The Proudest Blue”. It follows the little sister of Asiya on picture day. All the other siblings match and look the same in their pictures, but Faizah and Asiya do not because Asiya is wearing her hijab, and Faizah is wearing her red dress without a hijab. Together, they learn that although they are different than each other, it does not stop them. Faizah and her classmates learn how to celebrate differences through small acts of kindness.

Personal Response
I related to this book by being compared to my two older siblings. Oftentimes in schools, my teachers would ask if I was the younger sibling to my two older. This always made me uncomfortable because some teachers made it seem like I would be compared to my siblings instead of seeing me as my person and recognizing the differences between us as good qualities. Some of my teachers made assumptions without knowing me as a student instead of using the differences as a good quality.
Teaching Ideas
This would be a great book on the first day of school. I always pick read-aloud that shows my students the type of person I am and the type of environment in my classroom. This read-aloud would demonstrate that in my classroom, we celebrate people’s differences and don’t make assumptions based on a person’s family or physical appearance, including what they wear. I would use this book to help create my desired classroom environment to show my students that we will celebrate differences.
