Summary

In this text, a Korean girl named Dayeon strives to be just like her grandmother by participating in the tradition of finding treasures buried at the bottom of the sea. In order to help develop courage, Dayeon eats some of her grandma’s porridge and practices her diving skills. Although a past memory scares Dayeon into facing her fears, she keeps trying with guidance until she achieves success.

Traditions, Bravery, and Values

Personal Response

I really enjoyed reading this text as I noticed the theme of “bravery” stood out to me, especially because this is something that relates to my current life. I have always been the type of person who had to work hard to achieve success, especially in the field of teaching. I never used to have a lot of self-confidence in myself. I used to doubt my abilities and fear the worst but from reading, it has taught me that it takes a lot of courage to face our fears. No matter what, we cannot give up.

Teaching Ideas

In May, being that it’s Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I would read the students this text. During this time, we would learn more about the culture. While reading the text, I would engage the students in meaningful conversations about their own goals that they have as I construct an anchor chart that lists key points from our discussion. Following the reading, the students will be asked to elaborate on their responses and include an illustration that corresponds to their goal.
